This page contains a description of the AP Chemistry units.
All other material is now posted in the AP Chemistry Drop Box that we share.
Current Unit
January 22nd - January 29th
Most of what we see are in the solid and liquid phases. Only when gas molecules interact with light do we see them; Aurora Borealis is an example of gas molecules in an excited state emitting visible light. We have studied the behavior of gases and now turn our attention to the other 2 states of matter that we interact with on a daily basis. Chapter 10 in our text book contains the material you need to study.
All handouts are available in our drop box.

Past Units
Thermochemistry
January 6th - January 15th
This unit cover the energy changes that occur with change of state and chemical reactions. All forms and documents are available in our drop box.

Chemical Bonding
Sept 18 - October 15th
This unit covers Chapters 8 and 9. It is pivotal in understanding the nature of pure substances. Students will develop a deeper understanding of ionic, molecular, and metallic substances. In addition, students will use molecular geometry to predict properties of molecules and vice versa. Hopefully students will master the ability to translate a 2-D diagram into a 3-D image in their mind or into an actual 3D model. Very useful when interpreting 2D diagrams of any kind.

Periodicity
Sept 17-24th
This unit describes the organization of the Periodic Table and the patterns of the properties of the atoms. The Periodic Table is an essential tool to the chemist and a student who masters the table has great insight into the workings of individual atoms.

Atomic Theory
Sept 4 - 16th
This is the beginning of the understanding the nature of matter. It is basic physics, the interaction between particles of opposite charge, that gives rise to all matter. Absolutely amazing that these incredibly small particles make-up our whole corporeal existence.

EVERYTHING we do and see can be linked to its chemical or particulate properties, even rainbows. Go to the "I Can See a Chemistree!" page and tell me how rainbows are related to chemistry.
